The first baby came naturally, so it catches many couples off guard when the second takes far longer than they expected, or does not arrive at all. There is a name for it. Secondary infertility is the inability to conceive after twelve months of regular unprotected intercourse, or six months once you are past 35, following a biological child you already have. A full workup for secondary infertility runs through a number of things. The hormone levels come first, AMH and FSH and LH and TSH and prolactin. A semen analysis after that. The uterine cavity gets looked at, whether by ultrasound or by hysteroscopy. And a tubal patency test, the HSG being the usual one there. Where a C-section sits in the history, that cavity check is the part that carries extra weight.
